Sep 23 - Gibraltar Represented at Merchant Navy Memorial
Gibraltar was recently represented by Mr. Ian Leyde, of Gibraltar House, London at the Merchant Navy Memorial Day in Liverpool. A service, attended by representatives of People's Republic of China, India, the Netherlands and Canada paid respect to the 60,000 Merchant Navy sailors who died during World War II. Liverpool was the main base for the Battle of the Atlantic, in which 36,000 merchant seamen died.
Following the service the congregation proceeded to the Pier Head Memorial by the River Mersey for the wreath laying ceremony.
Mr Leyde was representing Mr Albert A Poggio GMH OBE, Gibraltar’s United Kingdom Representative.
