Oct 24 – Environment Department CEO Attends IUCN Conference

The Chief Executive of the Department of the Environment, Dr Liesl Torres is attending the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change in Guadeloupe this week.

Dr Torres joins scientists and government officials from across the world as they focus on addressing this vital topic. The conference will address five themes, broken down into several workshops held on October 22 and 23. These workshops are: enhancing resilience, halting the loss of biodiversity, promoting the green and blue economy, improving knowledge, finding innovative financing mechanisms. Their objective is to provide operational and practical proposals that will serve as the roadmap for the coming years with regard to biodiversity and to address the problems induced by climate change in the Overseas Regions (OR) and the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT).

Dr Torres will focus on developing blue and green economies, in particular within the fields of Ecosystem services, Fisheries, the EU Marine domain and Ecotourism. This is yet another example of Gibraltar contributing and networking with the Overseas Territories in defining and driving environmental issues.
