Oct 24 - Completion Of Line Wall And Rosia Road Resurfacing Works

The Government is pleased to announce that, as part of the Government’s commitment to improve the condition of Gibraltar’s road network, the first phase of the major road-resurfacing programme involving Rosia Road and Line Wall Road has recently been completed.

Given that these are major roads, the project has been carried out in stages to minimise traffic disruption. The contractor was only allowed to take possession of the roads between 7:00pm and 11:00pm during weekdays although longer working hours were allowed during weekends when traffic flow is substantially reduced.

These two major roads have not been fully resurfaced for many years and were among the major roads deemed most neglected. The works involved planning of the existing surface, the replacement of numerous manhole covers and slabs and the laying of a hot asphalt-wearing course over a total area of 3000m2.

The Government is grateful for the cooperation and patience shown by drivers and residents while these works were underway but trust that improvement will be appreciated.

Following on from Rosia Road and Line Wall Road, the northern section of Flat Bastion Road has also been completely resurfaced and work is currently underway to resurface a stretch of Europa Road, south of the ex-Naval Hospital. This has had to wait until the Buena Vista development completed its works to lay services and footpaths before proceeding.

The second phase of the major road resurfacing programme is currently being planned and the aim is to resurface Queensway as well as the Waterport, Sundial and Harbour Views roundabouts, all of which are in need of attention.

The Minister for Traffic, Paul Balban, said:
“A major road resurfacing programme has been lacking for many years as a result of considerable underinvestment by the previous administration. These roads were last resurfaced well over 15 years ago in spite of continuous representations made by road users as to their dangerous state. This Government, in keeping with its commitment will be undertaking an annual road resurfacing maintenance programme to ensure that roads are adequately maintained in the future.”
