Nov 20 - Government Will Meet Governor's Meadow Parents Next Week Following Building Site Incident

The Government says it has investigated the incident which occurred yesterday as a result of the works to construct Charles Bruzon House for the elderly.

The Government says that, at the time, a couple of health and safety operators were on top of the steel protection structure that has been constructed above the school roof. A secondary netting protection was being installed at the time. This netting is over and above the main safety netting which rises with the building structure.

It was at this time while workmen were also in the area where timber planks are used as spreaders, that the noise was heard. This was caused by the movement or placing of the timber planks on the steel. The Government says it has been assured that planks did not fall on to the steel structure from above.

The technical advice to the Government is that all the necessary health and safety procedures are in place. This is not the first time that works of this nature take place next to a school, it says, and the safety procedures to follow “are already tried, tested and improved.”

However, the Government says that the concerns of parents and others are “perfectly understandable” which is why this morning the Minister for Education Gilbert Licudi visited the school and listened to the concerns of a group of parents.

The Government has determined that the works on Charles Bruzon House will stop while a full health and safety review is carried out and pending a meeting between Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Minister for Education Gilbert Licudi with parents. The meeting will take place on Monday at 3.30pm at the school.
