Dec 18 - Government Denounces Europa Sur Article on Employment and Criminal Convictions

europa sur Reports published today in Europa Sur and other ‘Grupo Joly’ publications have made ‘entirely erroneous’ claims that the Gibraltar Government has enforced the obligation of employees in the private sector to disclose any previous criminal convictions to employers.

Seemingly outraged by the claim, the Government of Gibraltar has hit back by saying that their policy has always been that ‘the disclosure of criminal records is required in respect of any individual who applies to be employed in the public sector or to be employed to work on Government sites. This disclosure is required of all Gibraltarians, of British Citizens and individuals of any nationality and is subject to the limits set out in national legislation.’

No such requirements exist for employees of the private sectors, disregarding any employers decision to ask for this information from employees. The article further states that employees (Spanish ones in particular) have until Christmas to present these convictions.

A Government spokesperson noted that the report was ‘entirely erroneous, untrue and a clear attempt to prejudice public opinion against Gibraltar.’ They added, ‘this has become a common feature of Grupo Joly publications which never seeks a comment or view from HMGOG before publication of rumours and innuendoes as facts.’
