Mar 02 - Port Authority Removes Fishing Nets Off Europa Point

Yesterday afternoon, following reports of a fishing net drifting between 50 and 100m off Europa Point, the Port Launch, General Elliot II, was deployed to investigate. On arrival, it was seen that the net, believed to belong to a Spanish fishing boat, extended several hundred metres and posed a serious risk to navigation for passing vessels. In an operation that took over two hours, the Duty Port Officer, Matthew Ferrary, assisted by Coxswain Leslie Ward at the scene, coordinated the recovery and safe removal of the nets, supported by an RGP launch and the Molinary tug, Ana.

Once recovered, the nets were landed at the port where they were inspected by Department of the Environment officials.

Ironically, the net was located in an area where even Spain's illegal and inapplicable designation of an environmental protection zone in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters prohibits fishing.
