Mar 06 - easyJet Celebrates 1 Millionth Passenger From Gibraltar

easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, today celebrates flying 1 million passengers from Gibraltar less than seven years after starting flights from the airport.

easyJet began operating flights between Gibraltar and London Gatwick in April 2008 and now carries 130,000 passengers annually.

Services to Bristol from Gibraltar will also commence on 19 April. The new service will be Gibraltar’s only direct service to Bristol and will operate all year round on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Ali Gayward, Head of Gibraltar, commented: “We have seen an increased number of travellers looking to fly with easyJet on our Gibraltar routes due to our low cost fares and choice of destination so this is another great milestone for easyJet and Gibraltar.

“We are looking forward to the start of our year round service to Bristol. With affordable fares and flight time of just over two and a half hours, we’re confident that it will prove a popular service for both business and leisure travellers. We will have more than 19,000 seats available on the new service this summer alone.

“We remain fully committed to serving Gibraltar and supporting the growth of tourism and business through our easy and affordable fares.”

Minister for Tourism, Samantha Sacramento, congratulated easyJet and looked forward to the start of the Gibraltar-Bristol air service.

Ms Sacramento said: “We are delighted that easyJet has consolidated its operation in Gibraltar and has reached the one million passenger landmark. The Gibraltar Government’s commitment to the tourist industry remains robust and the imminent introduction of an air link to Bristol fully vindicates our hard work and staunch support for a vital sector of the economy. We are always looking at ways to ensure further expansion and we are confident that our partnership with easyJet will yield great dividends both for the business sector and the wider community. We are also extremely pleased at this development as the new flight to Bristol will further strengthen our historic and political links with the South West.”
