Apr 01 - Gibraltarian In Shortlist To Name London Street

A Gibraltarian living in London has been shortlisted out of over 10,000 entries in a global competition to name a new street in the heart of the capital.

Giulietta Durante, a nutritional therapist, sent her suggestion and was surprised to find that her proposal was among only 29 potential names chosen by the judges.

The competition invites suggestions for possible names for the new streets that have been created as part of the King’s Cross redevelopment project. Names will be picked from this shortlist over the next few years as the project advances.

Giulietta’s proposed street name is “Bagley’s Way” which pays homage to Bagley’s, the legendary club that stood on the crumbling goods yard behind King’s Cross station for over ten years.

“The club was the centre of the London house music scene throughout the 90s,” explains Giulietta.

“Speak to any clubber who ever went out in London during this period and their eyes will mist over with fond nostalgia at the mention of this clubbing mecca. I wanted my entry to reflect the recent past and to somehow embody all the good times that people spent in there and I’m very pleased that the judging panel decided to include this nod to popular clubbing culture. The actual name Bagley’s goes back even further as the club was named after the Bagley, Wild & Co soda bottle factory built on the site, this gives the street name further significance. I look forward to finding out whether my entry is successful in the coming months.”
