Apr 23 - Improvement Works Set To Transform Gibraltar Nature Reserve

The next phase of the ongoing improvement works in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve was unveiled today by the Minister for the Environment, Dr John Cortes.

Refurbishments and improvements to Mediterranean Steps and Inglis Way have been completed. In addition the area of Genoese Battery has been completely refurbished and is now open to the public.

Extensive works have also been carried out to Anglian Way, with a long-overgrown path having been opened linking this to the Queen's Lookout. Part of Anglian Way will temporarily remain closed while works to the next phase continues, expected to be completed in the summer.

Signs are currently going up to highlight the network of paths, and an App, called 'Upper Rock Paths' is now downloadable and being constantly upgraded.

At the end of the process there will be a full network of paths on the Upper Rock, opening up many new areas to the public. Works are also underway for a glass "sky-floor" overlooking the eastern cliffs and a rope suspension bridge connecting two sections of Royal Anglian Way.

The Government says that these schemes represent dramatic improvements and a revitalisation of our foremost tourist product and one of our greatest natural treasures.

The Government says it has invested considerable effort in improving the Nature Reserve for the benefit of locals and tourists alike. Officials today added that they would like to remind the public that all residents and visitors to the area have a role to play in maintaining the area.
