May 05 - Servicemen Help Create Tranquillity Garden For Cancer Relief Centre

A team of Service personnel recently volunteered to clear an overgrown area at the Cancer Relief Centre in preparation for landscapers to create a Tranquillity Garden.

Corporal Chris Royle, a regular volunteer at the Centre, was acutely aware of the overgrown area and lack of manpower to clear it. He decided to ask his colleagues in the Naval Base to step in, he said: “On my first day as a volunteer at the Centre I was aware of their vision to create a Tranquillity Garden. The area was completely overgrown with a lot of rubbish and rubble, it was just too big a task for one person, but I really wanted to help.  So I proposed the idea to the J3 Operations Team in the Tower and was delighted when everyone responded positively and wanted to get involved.”

The team spent a full day at the centre and managed to completely clear the area, they now intend to level the path, construct a fence and build a slope for wheelchair users. Cancer Relief Centre, Senior Nurse Grainne McKenna was very grateful for their help, she said: “It has long been a vision of the Centre to create a Tranquillity Garden for both patients and carers, with the help from the J3 Operations Team this vision is now becoming a reality. We are so happy and grateful for the work done so far and their commitment to continue helping. We look forward to providing this facility to our users soon.”

The Cancer Relief Centre provides free support to anyone affected by cancer. They currently offer a comprehensive holistic care service for both patients and carers, which supplements and supports the medical services provided by the GHA at St Bernard’s Hospital.
