May 22 - Historical Society Visit Victoria Battery

The Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service hosted a historical talk and a guided tour of Victoria Battery for members of the Gibraltar Historical Society.

A group of 26 members from the society were given a brief presentation of the history of Victoria Battery, followed by a tour by Firefighters Kenneth Busuttil and Francis Mena, last Saturday.

They learnt about why the battery was built in its location in 1883 and the visitors were given a detailed guide depicting the 100 Ton Gun in its emplacement and the battery’s basement magazine.

Members of the society were then given an opportunity to go into the labyrinth of tunnels that form the battery’s magazines in the basement with detailed explanations an how armament was transported and loaded.

Some people were delighted to go into the steam piston chamber, a confined space, where steam was produced as an essential part of the gun mechanism in the late 1800s.

The day was concluded with a tour of the Fire Station as well as a brief presentation of the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service. Each visitor was also provided with a historical guide of the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service.
