May 22 – Memorial Plaque Unveiled At Evacuation Roundabout

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia unveiled a memorial plaque at the Evacuation Roundabout on Waterport Road this afternoon.

This coincided with the 75th Anniversary of when the evacuation took place, when Gibraltarians were sent to French Morocco, before being subsequently sent to Madeira, Jamaica, London and Northern Island.

Speaking at the event, Mr Picardo, said: “Today is the day to do it as we are commemorating the 75th anniversary since the evacuation took place.

“We are doing it close to the old ferry terminal, where the Mons Calpe used to come and go and was the place of embarkation of many Gibraltarians.”

This evening, there will be a Memorial event held for more than 800 WWII evacuees at Casemates Square. The memorial will be opened by local trio Mount Opera, who will sing a number of songs from the wartime era, followed by texts read by evacuees of their time away from Gibraltar.

The event at Casemates will be followed by a reception at Grand Battery House, where those evacuees who have registered have been invited. A short film depicting the evacuation will be shown.
