Jun 02 – Farewell Presentation For CO’s Driver

Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ivor Lopez, recently gave a farewell presentation to his driver, who retired from the Ministry of Defence following 17 years of service.

Mr Joe Cruz joined the MOD in 1998 as part of the Grounds Maintenance team. He went on to work as a Clothing Storeman in 2002 before taking a job as the Commanding Officer’s Driver in 2006.

Lieutenant Colonel Lopez spoke fondly of Joe and thanked him for his loyalty and hard work, he said: “I don’t think people realise just how busy Joe has been in this role, it’s not just the amount of work during the day, but also the numerous evening tasks to attend functions and social events, which can be up to seven days a week. I’m sure I speak on behalf of previous CO’s when I say that Joe has become much more of a personal friend during his service. This is very much down to his personality, his warm and bubbly approach has certainly made some of my trips much more enjoyable.”

Joe was presented with gifts from both the Regiment and his locally employed civilian colleagues. It was an emotional moment for Joe who thoroughly enjoyed his role as the CO’s driver, he said:

“Being the CO’s driver was the best job I ever had at the MOD, I enjoyed all of my jobs to be honest but this was by far my favourite. I will definitely miss the people but I am looking forward to getting up a bit later in the morning.”
