Jun 02 – Inauguration Of The Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery

A dream came true for distinguished local artist Mario Finlayson when Gibraltar’s national art gallery, also named after him, was officially inaugurated today.

Dignitaries, artists and family members gathered for the opening of The Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery at City Hall, featuring works of arts by local artists.

Mr Finlayson, together with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Minister for Culture Steven Linares, unveiled the plaque for the entrance to the gallery.

In an emotional speech, Mr Finlayson explained that he had campaigned for a national gallery for Gibraltarian artists for several years with the previous government, but was disappointingly turned down.

He was surprised when the Government contacted him to tell him they have found the perfect location for the gallery, and they would like to name it after him.

Mr Finlayson added: “I still can’t believe this is happening to me, I feel like I am still in a dream. I have been waiting for so long to have a national gallery in Gibraltar.

“My whole ambition was to show Gibraltarians have come, and now they have arrived.

“With the opening of this gallery, I feel like every dream I have had has come true, and I think all people should follow their dreams.”

The gallery will host works of arts by Gibraltarian artists – Gustavo Bacarisas, Jacobo Azagury, Leni Mifsud, Rudesindo Mannia and Mario Finlayson, of course.  The collection was put together by Gibraltar Culture Services CEO Yvette Zarb-Bensusan and Art Collection Custodian Kimberley Pecino.

Mr Picardo said it was a pleasure to welcome everyone to the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery.

He added: “They say artists never profit in their own home, but we have shown Gibraltar recognises its talent, and gives them a place to demonstrate just how fantastic the artists Gibraltar produces in its own home are.”

Mr Picardo explained that it was only fitting to have the gallery named after Mr Finlayson as his work has spanned many artistic generations, not only in terms of his own work, but he has also taught generations of budding artists how to showcase their talents on the canvas.

Mr Linares took the opportunity to thank everyone involved in putting together the gallery in time for the launch. He also wanted to thank the housing department for their quick departure from their offices, as this is where the gallery is placed.

The Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery at City Hall will be open to the public as from tomorrow. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm from Monday to Friday.
