Jun 30 - Maths Teachers To Make Subject More Interesting For Pupils

Mathematics teachers from Bayside, Westside and the College, together with mathematics coordinators from the Middle Schools, took part in an in-service training day organised by the Department of Education.

Leading lecturers from both the Faculty of Mathematics and also the School of Education at Christchurch, University of Canterbury, delivered the training session on tracking and assessing pupil progress, as well as making mathematics relevant to our world, delivering lessons which enthuse and excite children to want to know more.

"We want our children to see the relevance of mathematics throughout: in science, in the arts, in sports...we want children to enjoy mathematics, and we want our teachers to deliver lessons which awaken in children a passion for mathematics," said Darren Grech, Senior Education Advisor.

He added that it was crucially important to measure the value added by a school to the educational journey of a child, and that the changes to the National Curriculum meant that teachers could not stand still: continuing professional development for teachers is crucially important in order to afford our children the best possible service.
