Jul 01 – Almost 400 University Students Take Up Summer Jobs Scheme

A total of 382 students have so far applied for the University Students Summer Jobs Scheme with all these applications having been processed. This follows the commitment entered into by the GSLP/Liberal Government to extend the scheme to all eligible students who were interested in a placement thereby removing the cap that had existed previously.

The Summer Student Induction took place yesterday in two sessions: one at 9:00 am and another at midday. A total of 233 students attended the induction sessions with the remaining students due to receive their induction at later dates, as and when they arrive from the UK.

The Scheme has been running for a number of years and has gone from to strength to strength. Last year 360 students were engaged. This year, the Scheme will run from 6 July to 28 August (approximately 2 months), and the application window will remain open for the duration of the summer placements. The total number of participants is therefore expected to rise to approximately 400.

As in previous years, students are being placed across Government Departments, Agencies, Authorities and Government-owned companies. This year, students have also been offered the opportunity to take part in an exercise which is currently underway involving the replacement of the new ID cards. 35 Students have received the appropriate training last week and, since Monday, have been manning the Temporary ID Card Stations at the Leisure Centre.

Where possible, students’ preferences and areas of study have been taken into consideration when identifying suitable placements for them. This year, the students have been invited to the induction to be briefed on the scheme and learn what is expected from them in the Summer Student Government Scheme.

Commenting on the matter, the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia said:

“The scheme is working very well. One of the aims of the summer placements is to contribute towards the professional development of the students and to give them an insight into what it is like to work with Gibraltar’s largest employer. It therefore provides a very real benefit to the young people involved and to the Government itself.”
