Jul 01 - Students Given A Taste For A Teaching Career

Students expressing an interest in teaching were treated to an inservice session delivered by visiting lecturers from Christchurch, University of Kent.

Teaching competencies, planning of lessons, assessment strategies, pacing, special educational needs and differentiation of work were all discussed. Students even got a chance to team teach a lesson to an audience simulating a class.

Senior Education Advisor, Darren Grech, commented that this type of work was considered crucially important in order to improve the quality of the service.

He added that it was vital for students embarking on a teaching career to do this for the right reasons, knowing full well what it entailed.

He said: "Teaching is tough and draining, it is hard work and late nights, but it is a beautiful career; it should be a vocation and not just a job.

"It is therefore so important that students of the right calibre are recruited, and, furthermore, that they go into teaching knowing that they are totally accountable for the education of future generations. We are looking for commitment, passion and an inordinate capacity for hard work."
