Jul 03 - RAF Air Cadets Take To The Sky

Royal Air Force (RAF) Air Cadets from No. 2 Overseas (Gibraltar) Squadron Air Training Corps recently took to the sky in a Royal Air Force C130 Hercules.

The Hercules has been based at RAF Gibraltar as part of the recent Submarine Parachute Assistance Group (SPAG) training exercise.

The 90 minute flight allowed the cadets to see stunning views of Gibraltar and witness two drops by the SPAG unit.

It was a truly memorable moment for Cadet Jamie Marques who had never flown before, he said: “I will never forget it, not only was it my first flight, but being able to see the SPAG unit jumping out was just unbelievable.”

The Cadets were delighted to be given the opportunity to go onto the flight deck for a true pilots eye view, Cadet Chrystelle Rodrigues said: “I can’t believe I got to be on the flight deck during the landing, it was a something I never thought I would get to do, and will never forget.”

Following the flight the Cadets spoke to crew members and had a look around the outside of the aircraft.

Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Ivan Caward was grateful to be able to give the Cadets such an exciting experience, he said: “Today’s flight has been better than I could have hoped for, the Cadets have thoroughly enjoyed it and they have learnt so much. It’s great to see big smiles on their faces. A big thank you goes to Wing Commander Greg Smith, Warrant Officer Phil Armitage and the rest of the staff at RAF Gibraltar for making it happen.”
