Jul 06 - New Police Barracks Block Set For Major Refurbishment

The Government says it is continuing with its next phase of refurbishment plans for housing estates. Works will soon commence on New Police Barracks (Willis’ Road) as part of the Government’s Upper Town Urban Regeneration Programme. The refurbishment will include the installation of lifts, the external insulation of the façades, the replacement of the existing windows with new double-glazed windows, and the construction of a new mono-pitch roof.

Planters and external walkways will aid the blending of the urban and natural environments, in line with the Government’s plans to give these long neglected urban areas a whole new lease of life. The refurbishment and improvement of the Upper Town is a key manifesto commitment, and the works to this strikingly beautiful but long-neglected area form part of the Government’s long- term vision of addressing community needs and creating quality spaces. The Government says that it is through investment in people, and the places that they care about, that we will be able to generate new activity, and attract new residents and visitors.

The Minister for Housing, Samantha Sacramento, said: “Major refurbishment works are well underway at Glacis, Laguna and Moorish Castle Estates, and the improvements are plain to see. Refurbishments to other estates are ongoing. We are ready to commence the next phase of works, starting with the New Police Barracks, in order that we can restore homes in the forgotten estates to a standard that people deserve, after 16 years of GSD neglect.”
