Sep 03 – New Schools To Drive Upper Town Regeneration

St Bernard’s First and St Bernard’s Middle Schools opened their doors to children for the very first time this morning. Both pupils and parents got a surprise when they were personally welcomed to their new schools by the Chief Minister and the Minister for Education.

The Chief Minister said:

“The opening of the two new schools at the site of the old St Bernard’s Hospital today has been a seminal experience for me. Of all the many things we have achieved in the past three and a half years, this is the one that has given me the most joy.”

Mr Picardo also said that the schools formed part of a wider regeneration of the area.

“With the refurbished Calpe block done, another to follow, New Police Barracks being refurbished next, Moorish Castle Estate already well on the way to being finished and the private tenderer already making plans ready for Police Barracks, the Upper Town is being transformed. We will have even more exciting plans for the future for education and for the Upper Town, but for now, I think we have done more than anyone expected we could deliver and more than any other administration has ever done in one term.”
