Feb 25 - Dr. Giraldi Inquiry to Issue Public Invitation for Evidence

govt crestIn December last year, an independent Inquiry was commissioned by the Government into Dr. Giraldi Home. The Terms of Reference of the Inquiry are to inquire into allegations of mismanagement, misconduct and malpractice (including abuse) at the Dr. Giraldi Home contained in witness statements intended to be relied on by Ms. Joanna Hernandez in connection with her claim of unfair dismissal by the Social Services Agency, as well as the conduct of the relevant authorities and agencies in response to, or otherwise in relation to, such allegations.

Feb 22 - BabySTEPPs Host Successful Launch Event

babysteppsYesterday evening saw an extremely successful launch for newly formed charity, BabySTEPPS.

The fund, chaired by mother Kate Llufrio, aims to promote well being in pregnancy and childhood, support of those experiencing difficulties in their journey to parenthood, or in their child’s early development and research into the causes of pregnancy complications and baby loss. The charity’s Patron is Dr. David White.

Feb 22 - RGP Training Scheme Launched

rgp training scheme The Royal Gibraltar Police, in conjunction with the Ministry for Enterprise, Training and Employment have today launched the RGP Trainee Scheme which is set to see a small group of 16-17 year olds engage in a vast spectrum of police duties, including engaging in community work projects, learning first aid and a run down of legislation and police discipline, as well as working on live investigations and carrying out attachments to Divisions and Specialist departments.

The Scheme is set to run for 12 month and will include an induction course. Trainees will be paid minimum wage and will be required to work 40 hours a week.  The RGP has obtained the full support of the Ministry for Employment and Training, who will provide funding for the course.

Feb 22 - Government Shoots Down New Humanist Group's GCSE Religious Studies Claim

shsgToday marks the launch of Gibraltar’s first Secular Humanist Society (SHSG), which aims to promote secular thinking within the community as well as knowledge of science and evolution. The group is made up of a number of locals with Professor Arif Ahmed of the University of Cambridge acting as the group’s patron.

The SHSG hopes to monitor the Government, to ensure separation of church and state and challenge public statements in favour of restricting freedom of choice or action on theistic grounds. They will also organise local debates and discussions on secular issues, as well as tours and events around Gibraltar. An introductory meeting will be held for members of the public tomorrow morning at 1pm, at 122 Irish Town.

Feb 22 Unite Women’s Committee

Unite The UnionSamantha Sacramento, Minister for Equality has this week met with representatives of Unite Women’s Committee. The Union has been undergoing a re-structure in this respect and the parties waited until this was complete before having their first formal meeting. What was intended to be an introductory meeting developed into an in-depth exchange of ideas, with discussions highlighting common concerns and objectives in the area of equality. The Minister and representatives of the Union are enthusiastic about working collectively towards common goals and have agreed to have regular quarterly meetings.
