Jul 23 - Commonwealth Games Start Tomorrow

Gibraltar’s participation at the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games gets underway tomorrow after tonight’s Opening Ceremony which will take in Glasgow’s Celtic Park.

Gibraltar’s flag bearer is Triathlete Chris Walker (on the left) who is participating in his fourth Commonwealth Games.

Chris says he is extremely proud and honoured to carry the flag at these prestigious games and is looking to do Gibraltar proud once again when he competes tomorrow.

The ceremony will see the Queen’s Baton brought into the arena for the last leg of its epic journey and HM The Queen will read her message to Commonwealth sportsmen and women which will see the games formally opened. A feast of entertainment will follow including high profile stars like Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle.

During yesterday’s General Assembly, the Gibraltar Games Association President Charlie Flower (pictured, on the right) was presented with the CGF Order of Merit for Services to the Commonwealth Games Movement.

Charlie, who competed at the first Games attended by Gibraltar in Cardiff in 1958 and has had a lifetime of association with the Games, was delighted with the recognition.

The attention will turn to the competitive action tomorrow with Gibraltar’s swimmers in the pool early in the morning, Gibraltar’s Squash trio will being at 11 and at 3 the Rock’s triathletes will take the plunge in the men’s triathlon.
