Jul 28 - Commonwealth Games Days 3 and 4 Follows Team Gibraltar through Shooting, Swimming and Squash

commonwealthSaturday kicked off the third day of the 20th Commonwealth Games competition, with Team Gibraltar participating once more in swimming and squash, as well as shooting.

Shooters Jonathan Patron and Louis Baglietto participated in the 10m Air Pistol event, registering a 555 to finish in 20th place and a 546 to finish at 23rd. 

Early on Saturday morning Gibraltarian Stephanie Piri made her Games debut competing in the 10m Air Rifle event coming in at 24th with her first shot of 394.4. Swimmer Jim Sanderson broke his 2nd National record of the Games, clocking 54.61 to finish 5th in his heat of the 100m Freestyle, while young Jordan Gonzalez narrowly missed adding another National record as he finished in a time of 29:83.

In squash Anthony Brindle lost to Scotland’s Kevin Moran 3 – nil. Other Gibraltar Team Mates Mark Tewkesbury and Christian Navas both won their morning matches in the consolation plate. The pair went on to lose their quarterfinal games 3 – nil and 3 – 2.

Sunday’s action saw Gibraltar Team member Allison Edwards participate in the Women’s Marathon, unfortunately when passing the 16km mark a recent foot injury flared up and she was forced to withdraw from the race.

Swimming continued with Christian Linares clocking in at 1:03:50 in the 100m Freestyle and Colin Bensadon finishing with a time of 31:90 in the 50m Breaststroke. Finally, Jim Sanderson finished just off the National Record, in the 100m Butterfly at 1:00:65.

Team Gibraltar member Jerai Torres competed in the heats of the 100m athletics programme, finishing at a time of 11.54 seconds. Finally, clay shooters Gary Cooper and Kevin Cowles participated in the trap event, with Wayne Piri and Albert Buhagiar competing in the men’s prone qualification and Nataile Piri making her debut in the Women’s 50m prone.
