Sep 01 - Gibtelecom Announces New Fibre Broadband Service to Offer up to 100Mbps

gibtelecom Gibtelecom today announced its newest service, to become available to certain areas of Gibraltar by October of this year. The SuperSwift Fibre Broadband internet service, using fibre to copper cable technology, provided via 50 cabinets across the Rock, will off customers three packages of up 16Mbps, up to 50Mbps and up to 100Mbps.

The infrastructure for the flagship project has been in process since the company began to switch customers to VDSL in 2012. Customers wishing to make the switch to fibre broadband are required to have already made the switch to VDSL.

The lower end of spectrum will cost customers £28 a month and will see high definition movies downloaded in a space of 34 minutes, with a upload speed of 1.6Mbps available. The 50 Mbps option will see a HD movie downloaded in 4 minutes. Costing £58 a month this offer will see an upload speed of 5Mbps. The 100 Mbps package can download a HD movie in 6 minutes and offer an upload speed of 10Mbps, for £78.

Speaking to the press today, Gibtelecom Technology Director Jansen Reyes noted that Gibraltar would be one of the first countries to be able to offer 100Mbps via this service. Only around ten other Telecommunication companies in the world use the G.Vector system that Gibtelecom is implementing.

Although the programme will be rolled out towards the end of 2014, a number of areas in Gibraltar will not have access to the service until next year, as the infrastructure continues to be developed. Interested customers can currently visit www.fibrebroadband.gi to sign up for the service and be alerted of its availability in their area. Once is becomes available, Gibtelecom will contact the party when they are looking to install the service in their premise. Costs will include a small installation fee of £40.

Mr. Reyes was adamant that by the end of 2015, all of Gibraltar should have access to the 100Mbps Internet service. He further commented, ‘this capital investment of over £3 million in our Next-Generation Network and increased fibre footprint should serve Gibraltar for many years to come. It is a crucial development in making high-speed broadband available to customers.’

The development in services would most likely not have been a possibility had Gibtelecom not become a part of the Europe India Gateway. This move also meets The European Commission’s target of offering 30Mbps broadband by 2020.
