Nov 27 - KPMG Announces Gibraltar’s First Seminar On Digital Currencies

KPMG Gibraltar has teamed up with international law firm Hassans to host ‘Decrypting the Myths’; Gibraltar’s first seminar on digital currencies, to be held on 4th December at the Sunborn Hotel.

The afternoon of panels and speeches will see global experts in the digital currency space provide up to 200 delegates with the knowledge and insight needed to cut through the complexity of this fascinating and often misunderstood emerging technology. A specially designed programme offers new initiates to the technology an introduction to its workings and potential, after which a series of specialists will address the industry’s latest developments and the topics most pertinent to local businesses.

Attendees will be welcomed by KPMG’s Managing Director, Micky Swindale, who will hand over to the Minister for Financial Service and eGaming, Albert Isola, to open the event. Founding Board Director of the Bitcoin Foundation, Jon Matonis, will then begin proceedings with a global introduction to virtual currencies and decentralised applications. Eric Benz of world leading cryptocurrency payment intermediary GoCoin will address the applicative and marketing potential of digital currencies before introducing Miles Paschini, Group President of Gibraltar based payments group Wave Crest. Mr Paschini will address the enormous implications of cryptocurrencies within the global payments market in a presentation which fittingly contextualises the day’s first panel session, moderated by KPMG’s Archie Watt, entitled ‘Cryptocurrencies: understanding the opportunities’.

Regulatory and legislative expert Siân Jones of COINsult will then provide an overview of the technology’s contentious regulatory landscape to introduce the taxation, regulation and security portion of the seminar after which Konrads Smelkovs, ethical hacker and Manager, Information Protection & Business Resilience at KPMG, London will discuss how to keep cryptocurrencies safe. The afternoon’s presentations will conclude with the day’s second panel session, moderated by Anthony Provasoli, Partner at Hassans, who will be joined by four industry experts to explore the taxation, regulation and security of cryptocurrencies.

Following some closing words from Tony Provasoli, Senior Partner at Hassans, delegates will then enjoy the chance to meet and discuss the day’s insights with the programme’s experts and round off the seminar over drinks and canapés kindly sponsored by Hassans.

Commenting on the event, Micky Swindale, Managing Director at KPMG Gibraltar stated: “Since their inception, Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general have met with a mixed response. Despite their enormous potential for good, they have a chequered reputation which we believe is largely propagated by a lack of understanding and clarity on the issues they raise. An event such as this is the perfect opportunity to provide both new initiates and experienced crypto-enthusiasts with a clear and unequivocal appraisal of the industry from those at its forefront. We hope this will constitute a seminal event for Gibraltar and genuinely decrypt some myths.”

The KPMG Cryptocurrency Seminar takes place on Thursday 4th December at the Sunborn Hotel, Gibraltar. Presentations will take place from 2pm to 5pm, with drinks and canapés served from 5pm.
