UKIP MEP, Lord William Dartmouth has urged the British Government to be stronger in its dealing with Spain over increasing incursions into Gibraltar’s territorial waters. He noted that ‘polite complaints through diplomatic channels and pointing out that the Royal Navy is in the vicinity just are not nearly strong enough to deter the Spanish’.
He also claimed that these incursions are becoming more frequent and more blatant and once it reaches the stage where a Guardia Civil detains a fishing crew in their own waters, then it is a serious breach of sovereignty. Lord Dartmouth explained that the Spanish Government are ‘obviously doing this to divert attention from their horrendous Eurozone mess’.
‘Now is the time for our Foreign Secretary William Hague to talk directly and firmly to the Spanish Government and warn them that no further incursions that threaten British sovereignty will not be tolerated.’
