Her Majesty's Government of Gibraltar notes the statement from the GSD opposition accusing Ministers of "what could amount to political corruption" in relation to the bus company which has lost about £2.5m a year under the previous administration.
The GSLP Statement goes on to add that it has been in place for 10 weeks and is in the process of uncovering the deals and payments by the previous administration which can be objectively best be described as being of questionable value for money.
The Government has stated in its press release that the GSD administration employed a large number of people who were their supporters in highly paid cushy jobs and maintained them in post; as well as paying over £156,000 for the publication of the 7 Days to defend its partisan political views. “That could certainly have been described by independent observers as political corruption of the worst sort ever seen in the political history of Gibraltar” - despite the then Chief Minister pretending that he represents the moral high ground.
A spokesman for Her Majesty's Government of Gibraltar said: "Given the state of public finances we have inherited, it is absolutely right to rationalise costs. Moreover, the public needs to know that the costs involved to date in the bus company running the Sardena case have so far almost doubled the maximum amount that the Claimant might have won if he had succeeded in his claim when he filed it.
The statement ends with the following strong stance; The Government of Gibraltar stands by its decisions in relation to the former directors of the bus company and to appoint independent civil servants to the post."
