Gibraltar is getting ready to once again celebrate Pride month this June. This event is celebrated in many countries around the world and is essentially a call for greater unity, visibility and equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
Last week Gibraltar won the Gold Medal at the Dance World Cup staged at the spectacular Brighton Dome in England. The Gold medal was won by Nicole Victor in the Junior Show Dance and Jazz solo sections with a piece ‘My Immortal’ and choreographed by herself.
The 10 strong team competed against thousands of dancers from 26 countries and 5 continents and Gibraltar was represented in the Mini Kids, Children, Junior and Adult divisions.
The Treaty of Utrecht - actually a series of documents - was signed in the Dutch city of Utrecht over a period during 1713. The Treaty helped to end the War of the Spanish Succession, which involved various competing nations including Great Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Savoy and the Dutch Republic.
Article X of the Treaty of Utrecht, which is of such high importance for Gibraltar and its inhabitants, was signed on the 13th July 1713. This article contains the oft-quoted text:
“The Catholic King does hereby, for himself, his heirs and successors, yield to the Crown of Great Britain the full and entire propriety of the town and castle of Gibraltar, together with the port, fortifications, and forts thereunto belonging; and he gives up the said propriety to be held and enjoyed absolutely with all manner of right for ever, without any exception or impediment whatsoever.”
Two further Gibraltar Defence Police dog handlers have just completed their training, bringing the Force’s patrol dog section into full operation. PCs Brandon Avellano and ‘Scotty’ Diani are now part of the six-strong team following their successful completion of an intensive 9 week course delivered by Sergeant Andy Gaunt, who is currently seconded to the GDP from the UK.
Sergeant Gaunt said, ‘I have been very impressed by the enthusiasm and ability of these two officers. They have responded well to the training and are now fully accredited police dog handlers.’
