Birthdays

Birthdays are something you really look forward to when young, the excitement of all those presents waiting for you, at times would be unbearable to the point where you would drive your parents up the wall just to get them early. As we get older birthdays lose their lustre, as we now look forward to things like the big 30 or the big 40.

Getting older for some is a big issue, its almost as we would like to stop the passage of time. After the big day I tend to look at my reflection in the mirror and take a really good look at my face, trying to see if there are any physical changes and on most occasions there is no discernable difference. (I once woke up with a black eye) I shrug my shoulders and get on with the new day. But the passage of time can sometimes remind us that we are no longer 20, stiff joints, not being able to read small print and my firm favourite hair growth in places where you thought hair could not grow.

These are physical changes; we also start to change psychologically, things that we could deal with, like house music or rock now irritates us, we start to write updates on Facebook complaining about how much noise those darn pesky mopeds make, we prefer a cosy night in rather than a night out on the tiles.

We are now getting old and we begin to wonder if we are now consigned to a future in elasticated trousers sat in front of the television complaining about the weather. We don’t have to, just because you are now in a certain age group it does not mean you have to conform, accept or give up on many of the things that used to make you happy, don’t suppress the inner child.

My secret to staying relatively young looking is exercise, good diet and most importantly thinking young, by this I mean getting out and about and doing all the things that used to get you excited as a child or as teenager, see a puddle, jump in it, why not?

You are only going to get your feet wet.  It was the editor’s birthday yesterday, he is not here today, apparently it was a good night.

I hope when he looks into the mirror, when he finally gets up he will have none of the hang-ups that are associated with the passage of yet another year, but instead a big wide grin a banging hangover and the uncontrollable urge to pull his girlfriend's pigtails.
