Due to the elevated emotions surrounding the apparent last-minute cancellation of HMS Queen Elizabeth’s call in our waters I felt it best to forgo an article for May. That being said the month of June has surpassed anything I have ever witnessed in Gibraltar for many a decade in terms of variety and pace of military visits. This article will therefore be a bit longer than usual and long may that continue!

April 2021 will go down in local history as the month in which our relevance to British defence affairs took a quantum leap. It was a case of quality beating quantity as the only Royal Navy visit of a very quiet month served to change things for the better here in the long term. By contrast RAF Gibraltar was once again a very busy place during the past 30 days.

Although March once again proved a barren period for visits at sea, this was more than made up for by the sights on land and in the air making it a memorable month whereby we were treated to old friends and some very traditional sights.

As the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic thankfully began to ease during the month of February, a relatively quiet month for military movements was had. Once again however, it was to be the quality of the visits as opposed to the quantity which helped to make it an interesting and not altogether run of the mill period.
