Apr 06 - Team Calpe Will Cycle From London To Gibraltar To Raise Money For Calpe House

A group of eight cyclists will be setting off on a 15-day cycle ride from Calpe House in London to the Rock of Gibraltar to raise funds for the Calpe House Charitable Trust.

Team Calpe is hoping to gain support as well as raise funds for the £15 million refurbishment that will see two Grade II listed buildings into 38 en suite rooms for patients and their family while in London for much-needed medical attention.

While preparing to set off on the cycle ride, the team has also organised a spinathon at the Trends megastore in Main Street as from 10am on Saturday 29th April.

YGTV spoke to Gavin Cavaco from Team Calpe. Here is what he said about his experience so far:

How many people are involved in the cycle ride from London to Gibraltar?

A group of eight cyclists and two support drivers are carrying out the actual ride, but this endeavour could not have been organised without the support of our family, friends and our main sponsors GibOil and MH Bland.

How long do you think it's going to take?

We will take 15 days to complete the challenge, we will be cycling an average of 150km a day.

How has the training been so far?

Cycling is our passion so it’s something we practice regularly. However given the scale of what we intend to accomplish we have had to step it up a bit to make sure that we all complete the ride successfully and I think that at the moment we are on track to succeed!

Why choose Calpe House as your chosen charity and what made you all decide to take part?

Calpe House is Gibraltar's home away from home and has served Gibraltarians for many years whilst in the UK receiving medical treatment.

The Government of Gibraltar has invested a huge amount of money to purchase the new Calpe House building to further expand the facility for the benefit and comfort of its users. We all think this charity is one of many local charities that will continue to serve the local community and one that deserves to supported for many years to come.

Our challenge is an extremely tough one, both mentally and physically with a view of raising as much money as possible for this worthy cause.

We all have a passion for cycling so the decision to take part was quite easy, I personally put the idea on the table and another member of the team had also been approached by one of the Calpe House Trustees coincidentally at the same time.

Choosing team members was difficult as over 20 local cyclists expressed an interest to take part.

When do you set off and when are you due to arrive in Gibraltar?

We set off on Friday 2nd June and are scheduled to arrive back in Gibraltar 17th June 2017.
