May 08 - Gibraltar Alzheimer’s And Dementia Society Present Blanket Exhibition

An exhibition of works organised by the Gibraltar Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society (GADS) at the John Mackintosh Hall was opened this afternoon by the Minister for Heath, Care and Justice Neil Costa.

On display are “fidget blankets”, cushions and aprons made by GADS volunteers. These will soon be distributed to people suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia who often find comfort by touching different textures and shapes on blankets. This activity is found to be helpful once sufferers of these conditions are no longer able to concentrate and follow television programmes and conversations.

Daphne Alcantara from GADS said: “I want to say a massive thanks to all the ladies who come in every single Tuesday to Bishop Canilla House to help with this. This is their love, their dedication, their generosity which they give every single week.”

Minister Costa added: “The work that GADS does is truly impressive. […] Whereas the government can pay for care and services, what GADS does are things that are illustrated by actions like holding a hand, a special quiet word; those elements of care that a hospital may be unable to provide during extremely busy and demanding periods. This exhibition is exactly what GADS does so well – the community cannot but be extremely grateful to all of you for the time that you spend putting these many ideas together.”
