Aug 17 - Startup Grind Event Ticket Sales To Be Donated To Charity

All proceeds from the ticket sales for the next Startup Grind event - featuring Wavecrest CEO Brent Almeida – will be donated to the Guardian Angel Foundation.

The foundation is a Gibraltar registered charity (No. 237) which aims to provide financial and other support to local children affected by poverty or suffering from any illness or any form of disability, whether physical or mental.

Startup Grind is a connected online and offline network of vibrant startup communities to help fuel innovation, economic growth and prosperity at the local level. In just a few short months they have established a strong presence on the rock. While Startup Grind was founded in Palo Alto, California, the extended network of Startup Grind chapters are located around the world.

The Gibraltar Chapter run by Chapter Director Denise Matthews believes in a social and corporate responsibility to the local community.

Denise said: “Through this exercise we believe in enforcing the values of the organisation and encouraging our business community to support not only a charity but also the initiative of new business and a startup ecosystem especially in the digital space by attending these events. This will incite new careers and attract talent in a fast changing world of technology and innovation.”

This connects with the Startup Grind values which are: “We believe in making friends, not contacts. We believe in giving, not taking. We believe in helping others before helping yourself. We are truly passionate about helping founders, entrepreneurs and startups succeed. We intend to make their startup journey less lonely, more connected and more memorable.”

Brent Almeida, the event guest on 7th September, spent six years working for GTECH Corporation (now IGT Corporation) where he focused on M&A and strategic growth initiatives before moving to Gibraltar in 2009 to oversee the integration of four new online gaming acquisitions into a single business unit.

Shortly after arriving in Gibraltar, Brent met the two co-founders of WaveCrest and eventually joined them as Chief Financial Officer to help build the company from the ground up and secure external financing. He will tell us what it has been like to raise the capital, to set up a technology based startup with the challenges that need to be overcome locally. We will also talk about how new technologies, cryptocurrency, big data and Artificial Intelligence will change business as we know it.

Brent took on the Chief Operating Officer responsibilities before eventually becoming CEO later that same year. He will talk about the challenges and benefits of setting up a startup locally, new technology within business and the new career opportunities that Gibraltar is rapidly being exposed to.
