Nov 28 - Cancer Research To Host Talk By Biomedical Scientist

As part of its 50th anniversary in Gibraltar, Cancer Research UK has organised a talk by Dr Ana Rio-Machin on Thursday 30 November at 6pm at the Garrison Library.

Dr Ana Rio-Machin is a biomedical researcher focusing on blood cancer. She graduated in Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Salamanca and received her Masters in Molecular Biomedicine at Autonomous University of Madrid. She completed a PhD programme at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), working on cancers that affect the blood and lymph system.

Since 2015, Ana has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Haemato-Oncology at Barts Cancer Institute in London, part of Queen Mary University of London, where her research focuses on genetic mutations in patients' DNA that lead to the development of inherited acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive rare blood cancer which affects multiple members of the same family. She has authored several research articles and is a champion for sharing cancer research with the public.
