Sep 16 - Upper Rock Challenge Raises Funds for Rett Syndrome Sufferer

newsThis weekend will play host to the 2014 Upper Rock Challenge. Individuals are being invited to walk the Mediterranean Steps trail three times in aid of local charity the Saffron Rose for Rett Charitable Trust and St. Martin’s School.

Those interested in carrying out the walk will be required to pay a £10 entry fee, but can also raise further funds via sponsorship. Interested parties are invited to gather groups of friends or colleagues to carry out the challenge. A number of businesses have already signed up teams, including IBEX Insurance and the City Fire Brigade.

The walk will kick off at 9am on Saturday 20th September, from Jews Gate. Those taking part will be raising funds for young Gibraltarian girl Saffron Rose, who was diagnosed with Rett syndrome a few years ago. The illness causes developmental reversals in children, meaning that after the ago of around two years old, they will lose their ability to communicate and use motor functioning skills. Saffron Rose’s parents have, through hard work and research, discovered a new technology that will able their daughter to communicate using an ‘eye recognition computer’.

Funds raised from the day will allow for an eye recognition computer to be donated to St. Martin’s School. Organisers Matt Coulthard, Dwayne Ethrington and Nicky Gomez are hoping to raise enough money to purchase eight hand held units to work in conjunction with the computers.
