The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).

Apr 18 - Cannabis Dealer Jailed For 16 Months

A 28-year-old man has been jailed for 16 months for the possession with intent to supply more than 40kg of cannabis resin.

Keith Asquez, of Rosia House, was arrested in February last year after neighbours contacted the police to complain about a grey and black bag being kept on the landing. They opened it to find almost 9kg of cannabis resin inside. Following tests carried out the DNA matched that of the defendant.

A few months later, in April, neighbours once again complained about a suitcase being kept on the landing, this time containing 34kg of cannabis resin.

Asquez pleaded guilty to the possession of and possession with intent to supply the drugs, however his lawyer Chris Miles said he was storing them for someone else.

Mr Miles said his client had been foolish at the time and had pleaded guilty to the charges.

While sentencing, the Chief Justice Anthony Dudley said the second offence was further aggravated because it was committed while Asquez was on bail.

Asquez, who has been in custody since October last year, was sentenced to four months in custody for the February incident, and 12 months in prison for the April incident, with the terms to be served consecutively. There was a reduction in his sentences for entering an early guilty plea.

The Chief Justice ordered for the drugs to be destroyed.

James Lennane appeared on behalf of the Crown.
