Jun 15 - Wounding Trial – Local Man Found Not Guilty

A 56-year-old man accused of wounding his ex-girlfriend with a power drill has been found not guilty by a jury at the end of a Supreme Court trial.

Joseph Anthony Prescott, of Varyl Begg Estate, was cleared of one charge of wounding with intent after just half an hour of deliberation by the jury.

Prescott was charged with wounding with intent following a domestic incident with his former girlfriend in August last year. He was accused of causing two puncture wounds: one to the back of her head and one to her right leg.

Yesterday, the jury heard live evidence from Prescott who said he never intended to hurt her. While admitting he did cause the wound to her leg, he said it was “an accident”.

His lawyer, Justin Phillips, said this was an “unfortunate, horrible, and sad situation”, adding: “This is a sad story, there are no winners here.”

The trial was heard by Puisne Judge Karen Ramagge Prescott.

Mark Clive Zammitt appeared for the Crown.
