Jul 14 - Second Robbery Suspect Remanded In Custody

The second man accused of involvement in the alleged €1.5million armed robbery at a New Harbours tobacco warehouse was remanded in custody by the Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Samir Douaoui, 27, from Glacis Estate, who was charged on Wednesday with one count of possession of a firearm and one count of robbery, was denied bail yesterday morning.

Prosecutor Karl Tonna argued that there was reason to believe Douaoui would fail to surrender to bail and claimed that he had been violent against someone else while in the possession of a firearm.

Douaoui’s defence lawyer Patrick Canessa said that Douaoui was at low risk of absconding from the jurisdiction as his family live here and he was the sole breadwinner.

Stipendiary Magistrate Charles Pitto denied jurisdiction for the case and sent it directly to the Supreme Court for later this month.
