Dec 22 - Man Fined £1,000 For Insulting A Woman

A British national was found guilty of two counts of causing intentional harm, alarm and distress after insulting a woman online and laughing at her down Main Street.

Alistair Miller, 52, was fined £1,000 for one count, with no separate penalty for laughing at her, after being found guilty following a short trial held at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon.

Miller is accused of posting Facebook messages saying the woman was promiscuous and accused her of having a criminal past. He claimed these messages were “just banter” during the trial.

On another occasion, the defendant and the complainant bumped into each other in Main Street, and he “sarcastically and cynically” laughed in her face.

Miller maintained an innocent plea throughout for the incident which is said to have happened more than two years ago.

Nick Gomez appeared for the defendant, and James Lennane for the Crown. The trial was heard by Stipendiary Magistrate Charles Pitto.
