Jan 08 - Man Jailed For Money Laundering

A local man who pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison at the Supreme Court this morning.

Gerard Asquez, of Somerset House in Laguna Estate, was charged with one count of concealing or transferring the proceeds of criminal conduct after attempting to deposit £17,000 in his bank account between January and February 2015.

He was charged with the offence following his arrest some 18 months later for the possession and possession with intent to supply around 15g of cocaine, for which he is currently serving a jail sentence of five years and nine months.

This morning, Asquez’s lawyer Chris Finch said his client is already serving a long sentence in prison, and asked for this further sentence to be served concurrently.

While sentencing, the Chief Justice Anthony Dudley imposed a 30-week prison sentence, which was reduced to 16 weeks because of an early guilty plea.

The Chief Justice added that although the defendant supplied drugs to make a financial gain, this offence was committed 18 months earlier than when he was arrested in August 2016.

Asquez was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, to be served consecutively to his previous five years and nine months imposed by the judge in July last year.

Robert Fischel QC and James Lennane appeared for the Crown.
