Aug 12 - Trial Begins Of Senior Mental Health Welfare Officer Accused Of Stealing From Patient

The trial of Kenneth Paul Llambias started this morning at the Supreme Court. Mr Llambias is accused of stealing jewellery and money belonging to one of his patients who has a long history of mental illness.

In total, he stands charged with two counts of burglary and six of theft. These are alleged to have taken place during a period when Mr Llambias was visiting his patient regularly as part of his job as a Senior Mental Welfare Officer.

Mr Llambias is alleged to have entered his patient’s house on two separate occasions and stolen jewellery from a safe. He is also accused of using his patient’s bank card to withdraw money from his account a total of six times, withdrawing £250 each time.

The case will focus on whether the removal and sale of the jewellery occurred with the consent of the patient and whether he had also instructed Mr Llambias to withdraw cash on his behalf.

Although the trial is officially scheduled to last for two weeks, Judge Barrington Black today indicated that he hoped it would be over by the end of this week.
