Mar 07 - First RGP Roadwatch Operation to Launch Next Week
The RGP notes that it is fully committed to making the community safer. One important aspect of this is safety on the road. To achieve this the force has for a number of years embarked on a dedicated roads policing operation.
Operation Roadwatch is a year round RGP Banner operation that deals exclusively with the promotion of safety on Gibraltar's roads. It encompasses various strands that are designed to achieve the operational objectives and these are:
Intelligence gathering
Education
Awareness
Enforcement
De-brief and notification of engineering issues.
The Force’s stated objectives for the Policing Year 2012 – 2013 are (i) to develop ne initiatives under this operation, (ii) to proactively target illegal or irresponsible driving, particularly individuals who speed, drive in a dangerous or careless manner or drive under the influence of drink or drugs, (iii) to maintain traffic fluidity around Gibraltar and maintain high visibilty patrols to achieve this and (iv) to work closely with the different sectors of our community, to provide awareness and education in relation to road safety.
During the operation’s enforcement activity strand the RGP will be focusing their efforts on targeting persistent offenders and designated traffic offences on all our roads with individual units having specific areas of responsibility. The designated traffic offences all relate to safety on our roads e.g. dangerous driving, careless driving, not wearing seatbelts, speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, using mobile phones whilst driving etc.
It is pertinent to note that the majority of persons convicted of drink/drug related offences are having their driving licences suspended for considerable periods of time. The first quarterly Roadwatch Operation will commence on Monday 11th March 2013 with a week long awareness campaign undertaken by the RGP and HEO’s. The RGP will then be carrying out our targeted enforcement ampaign the week commencing 18th March 2013.
