Sep 23 - Suspended Sentence In Glass Attack Case

A young woman was handed a 12 month sentence suspended for two years after pleading guilty to wounding a woman with a glass outside a nightclub. Syanne Guiling, 21, threw a glass at the victim causing significant bruising and a small cut to her face. The incident dates back to April of last year.

Guiling had initially pleaded not guilty to both the wounding charge and the more serious offence of wounding with intent. Last week, however, just a few days before her trial was set to start, Guiling entered a guilty plea for the wounding charge. The Crown decided not to proceed with the charge of wounding with intent.

Judge Barrington Black, in sentencing Guiling at the Supreme Court, said the defendant’s decision to change her plea was “wise” and that the injuries sustained by the victim were not as serious as had been initially thought. He said the evidence showed that Guiling had not selected the glass deliberately as a weapon and that her actions showed a lack of premeditation. Nevertheless, he described the unprovoked attack as “totally unjustified”.

Judge Barrington Black also ordered Guiling to pay £500 compensation to the victim of the attack.
