Jun 08 – Sex Pistol Glen Matlock To Perform At The Rock On The Rock

Founding Sex Pistols member Glen Matlock will play an intimate acoustic show and share his insider rock-n-roll stories at Rock on The Rock as part of Gibraltar Music Week on Wednesday 30th August. He will be supported by local musician Gavin Garcia.

Matlock, a former art school student, has had a flourishing four-decade career in music. There is an old saying that goes, “Been there, done that and got the t-shirt”. Prime example of that is Glen Matlock. He was the original bass player of The Sex Pistols and penned ten of the twelve tracks included in their ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’ album.

Glen is looking forward to reuniting with close friend Midge Ure, both former members of Rich Kids. They released their only album in 1978 titled ‘Ghosts of Princes in Towers’. The lead single of the album ‘Rich Kids’ was a global chart success. Since then the band have reunited on two occasions in 2010 and 2016.

After also performing with Iggy Pop for his fifth album ‘Soldier’, Glen then formed The Spectres with Tom Robinson Band guitarist Danny Kustow, and subsequently Mick Hanson, and then Hot Club in 1982 with guitarist James Stevenson and singer Steve Allen. He also performed with The London Cowboys for a brief time in 1984.

Since then Glen has performed alongside The Philistines and has released six albums with them. A member of the reformed The Faces for 5 years, the band played festivals in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Japan.

Whilst a whole load of former punks and counter-culture-vultures are getting their knickers in a twist about John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) supposedly endorsing Trump and Brexit - how about this? Pistols bassist Glen Matlock continues to leave his mark on music history - he has inspired and assisted with an album of punk cover versions, ‘The Anarchy Arias’, performed by the English National Opera and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

As well as the Sex Pistols songs that he co-wrote, ‘Pretty Vacant’ and ‘God Save the Queen’, they tackle, ‘No More Heroes’, ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’, ‘Ça plane pour moi’, ‘Teenage Kicks’, ‘The Sound Of The Suburbs’ and other favourites from Buzzcocks, The Ruts, The Damned, X-Ray Spex and Joy Division.

‘Getting A Handel on Punk’ punned the Sun newspaper as Matlock posed holding a giant safety-pin instead of a bow with a double bass.

The Anarchy Arias’ is released 9th June on, now this is ironic, Virgin EMI Records. Forty years on from 1977 and punk has achieved RPO and ENO approval, Rotten really does want to save the Queen ... did the punk generation dye its hair in vain?

At the Rock On The Rock Club Glen Matlock will be supported by Gavin Garcia a Gibraltarian based in London. Gavin’s music blends elements of folk and various elements of rock. His roots in music started as a guitar player, with influences ranging from Metallica to UFO.

Gavin has been part of many local Gibraltar bands where he has played a range of styles, from metal and rock to pop and acoustic. As he discovered other artists and moved to London, he began to write his own material which eventually led to him taking up the courage to sing.

Songwriters such as Nick Cave and Neil Young have played an important part in his development as a songwriter. Gavin sings about life, death and everything in between, always trying to present sincerity in his song writing. Although he predominantly plays his songs solo and acoustic, he aims to develop them for live band performance soon, similar to what was done on his appearance on GBC’s hit program Sessions back in August 2016. His performance from this appearance was released as part of an EP last month and can be found on iTunes and Spotify.

When asked about his thoughts on supporting Glen Matlock, Gavin said, “It's a privilege to support Glen, a musician who has been at the forefront of a musical movement and it's an event that I am looking forward to with great excitement.”

Glen Matlock plays the Rock On The Rock Club, 41 Town Range, Gibraltar, on Wednesday 30th August as part of Gibraltar Music Week 2017.
