Jul 05 - International Garden Photographer Of The Year Exhibition Opens At The Alameda Gardens

The ‘International Garden Photographer of the Year’ exhibition was officially opened this morning by the Minister for the Environment Dr John Cortes.

Prizewinning images of subjects as diverse as Italian landscapes, insects and allotments are now on display in the Alameda Botanic Gardens next to the “Lions Pond” area.

Local photographer Leslie Linares (pictured below) took the top prize in the ‘Green Gibraltar’ category with Monica McMahon coming second.

The International Garden Photographer of the Year competition and exhibition specialises in garden, plant, flower and botanical photography.

It is wholly owned and organised by Garden World Images Ltd.

It is run in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. The main exhibition is held annually at Kew, with a rolling programme of touring exhibitions in the UK and all over the world.

Speaking this morning, the Director of the Alameda Dr Keith Bensusan said this exhibition marked the end of the gardens’ bicentenary celebrations.

Tyrone McGlinchey, the Managing Director and co-owner of the competition, said there were 22,000 entries this year from across the world.

Minister Cortes said: “The location is very appropriate for this exhibition. When I was invited to the opening of the exhibition earlier this year in Kew, I was stunned by the photographs. This natural setting is absolutely amazing – I would like to thank you for the interest you’ve shown in Gibraltar.”
