Local Student Awarded Place At Top Paris Drama School

A Gibraltarian Drama student has been awarded a place at the prestigious L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, one of the top drama schools in Paris.

Nicky Vatvani, who recently gained a First Class BA(Hons) degree in Performing Arts from Anglia Ruskin University, will be embarking on the school’s two-year actor training programme after having been recommended by his tutors. The school specialises in physical theatre, movement, use of body and space, mime, and clowning, following a method developed by teacher and theatre director Jacques Lecoq. Only ninety students are accepted every year, with applications received from all over the world. Notable alumni include Steven Berkoff, Geoffrey Rush, and playwright Yasmina Reza.

Nicky started acting in Gibraltar at a young age and performed in a number of productions with Bayside & Westside Drama Group and Trafalgar Theatre Group. He won Best Actor at the 2015 Gibraltar Drama Festival, having also won Best Actor in a Minor Role at the 2012 Duncan Rand Youth One-Act Play Festival held at Medway Little Theatre in Kent. Nicky has consistently performed at a high standard throughout his undergraduate degree, showing flair and creativity in a large number of intense avant-garde projects. The training in Paris will represent the next stage of his development as an actor as he looks towards exploring a career in physical performance.
