Jul 15 - Disappointed Viewers Criticise Top Gear Gib Episode

Local viewers of last night’s BBC 2 Top Gear episode were disappointed to find that, although part of the programme was filmed in Gibraltar, the presenters made no mention of where they were. The episode opened with various shots of the Rock with Rule Britannia playing in the background.

Jeremy Clarkson, who heads the show, introduces the episode by saying: “Here in Britain, the economy isn’t that great.” Clarkson sets the scene for the overarching theme of the episode which is to present the merits of some affordable supercars using the economic crisis in Spain as a backdrop. James May, another presenter, describes the journey they will take in the fast cars as one from “Britain to Madrid,” again failing to specify that they were in fact leaving from Gibraltar.

This choice of presentation was not received well by locals who voiced their disapproval on social media. Although many felt proud for the Rock to have featured in such a high profile and slick production, they also felt that the Top Gear team were doing a disservice to Gibraltar by failing to identify it as the location for the start of the trip.
