Dec 17 - City Fire Brigade Warn Public Against Using Chinese Lanterns

news The City Fire Brigade Fire Safety Department has informed the public that the use of Sky Lanterns, also known as Chinese Sky Lanterns, is not permitted in Gibraltar.

The Force claims that Sky Lanterns present a serious fire hazard when used inappropriately. They should not be used in built-up areas or within 5 miles of an airport or in coastal areas where lanterns may be interpreted as a distress signal. Clearly, this includes the whole of Gibraltar.

Dec 17 - UK Lords Push on EU Commission Frontier Recommendations

frontier Responding to questions in the House of Lords this week, The Conservative baroness Warsi told Lord Luce that the EU Commission had expressed its thanks for all the information on the Gibraltar Spain frontier delays that the UK and Gibraltar provided before, during and after the technical visit. The question asked whether the Commission had taken account of the evidence produced by the Gibraltar Government, of the flow of traffic at the frontier.

Crime Prevention Advice The Royal Gibraltar Police would like to remind the public of some crime prevention advice. The next few days leading up to and including the festive period will see a significant proportion of the community out shopping and celebrating Christmas and the New Year with family and friends.

The public are reminded that purses and handbags should be closed, kept in sight and firmly secured. Wallets should be kept in front pockets rather than rear pockets and mobile phones should be out of sight and secured if possible. When out socialising or celebrating again ensure that personal property is secured and kept in view at all times.

Dec 16 - Gibraltar International Bank to Ease Retail Banking Strain of Barclays Shutdown

cm bankingToday, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, with Financial Services Minister Albert Isola at his side, announced the development of a new, locally owned bank for Gibraltar that will offer a full range of banking services. The policy formerly made an appearance in the 1996 GSLP manifesto and has continued to do so in successive manifestos. The Chief Minister noted during the announcement that plans for the Government owned Gibraltar International Bank (GIB) have been accelerated following Barclays Bank’s decision to reduce its retail and corporate services in Gibraltar.
