Jul 20 - Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra To Perform In Gibraltar

The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will bring its repertoire from the last night of the BBC’s Proms when they perform in Gibraltar as part of this year’s National Day celebrations.

The concert will be held on Saturday 9th September in the Victoria Stadium, and is being held to mark the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum when 99% of Gibraltarians voted to remain British.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo in Number Six this morning, and the concert will also feature Soprano singer Laura Wright and Tenor Wynn Evans, with more details about the event to be released closer to the date.

He said the event will end at midnight when Gibraltar’s national anthem will be played to mark the start of the National Day celebrations.

The Chief Minister said: “This will be a magnificent way of recording, celebrating and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the referendum that creates National Day each year, and this year will be so much more special than it has been. It’s now half a century since the people of Gibraltar were freely able to express their desire to remain British by the ballot box and 15 years since the joint sovereignty referendum.”

Mr Picardo added: “The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra are going to be in Gibraltar and will deliver in great measure the last night of the Prom’s repertoire which is a very patriotic and very nostalgic way of remembering those who 50 years ago who were the ones responsible in the face of all the bullying Gibraltar faced at the time.

“I think this is a great way for people to celebrate Gibraltar’s Britishness and commemorate the referendum generation that started the ball rolling for the British Gibraltar that we have today.”

Tickets will go on sale soon and will be priced at £5 each with more details about where they will be available to follow shortly.
