Nov 13 - Chief Minister To Give Evidence To House Of Commons' Northern Ireland Committee

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo will be giving evidence before the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee of the House of Commons to describe the workings of the border between Gibraltar and Spain and the impact of Brexit.

This comes as part of a series of meetings held in London and attended by Mr Picardo, the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia and the Attorney General Michael Llamas QC, which will include detailed discussions on the United Kingdom and Gibraltar’s departure from the European Union.

A spokesman for Number Six said: "There will be a whole day of meetings at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Tuesday, with officials from a number of different UK Government departments. This is a continuation of the positive engagement between the two Governments to date.

"It will be recalled that Brexit Working Groups have been established on matters like Financial Services, On-Line Gaming, Environment, Border, and Transport that these continue to work in- between the main meetings.

"On Wednesday morning, the Chief Minister, accompanied by the Deputy Chief Minister and the Attorney General, will give evidence before the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee of the House of Commons. It is likely that the Gibraltar delegation will be asked to describe the workings of the border between Gibraltar and Spain.

"Issues such as frontier workers’ rights and passport controls will probably be discussed and, naturally, the Committee will be interested to hear how the Gibraltar delegation views the possible effects of Brexit on the border with Spain.

"Mr Picardo and Dr Garcia return to Gibraltar on Wednesday. In their absence, the Minister for Education and the Environment Dr John Cortes will act as Chief Minister."
